The Udhampur Lok Sabha constituency in Jammu and Kashmir witnessed an impressive voter turnout of nearly 65% by 5 pm during Phase One of the Lok Sabha Elections 2024. The constituency had already recorded approximately 43% voter turnout by 1 pm, which further rose to around 58% by 3 pm.

Comparing these figures with previous elections, Udhampur had a turnout of 70.15% in the 2019 Lok Sabha Elections and 70.95% in the 2014 Lok Sabha Elections. This year’s turnout reflects a substantial engagement of voters despite challenging circumstances.

This election holds special significance as it marks the first time Jammu and Kashmir is participating in Lok Sabha polls after the abrogation of Article 370 by the Centre in 2019. The constituency boasts 2,637 polling stations, and 12 candidates are vying for the seat.

Among the key contenders are Union Minister Jitendra Singh from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Congress leader Choudhary Lal Singh, a two-time former MP, and G M Saroori from the Democratic Party of Alliances (DPAP), alongside six independent candidates.

Jitendra Singh, eyeing a third term after securing victories for the BJP in 2014 and 2019, faces a competitive electoral landscape. Early voters displayed enthusiasm despite adverse weather conditions, highlighting their commitment to the democratic process.

The election infrastructure included over 11,000 polling staff and comprehensive security arrangements to ensure a fair and peaceful voting environment. Notably, the constituency boasts a substantial number of first-time voters and a sizable elderly population, emphasizing the diverse demographic participation in the electoral process.

The polling percentages from various segments of the constituency reflect widespread voter engagement across different areas, showcasing the democratic fervor in Udhampur during these elections.
